The number of used batteries is staggering. According to a speech by the International Energy Agency (IEA), a total of 750,000 electric vehicles were sold in the world in 2016. In 2016, China's electric vehicle sales reached 352,000, and the cumulative electric vehicle sales reached 650,000, surpassing the United States and becoming the world's largest market for electric vehicles. Driven by China's national policies, new energy vehicles are booming.

However, the development has also brought about strict energy and environmental issues. New energy vehicles are about to usher in the peak period of battery replacement or maintenance. According to the corresponding scrap standards, the China Automobile Technology Research Center expects that by 2020, China's cumulative scrap energy batteries will reach 120,000 tons-200,000 tons. How to deal with waste batteries and whether they are environmentally friendly has always been the focus of controversy over whether new energy vehicles are truly environmentally friendly.

The composition of battery contamination takes the low-temperature lithium iron phosphate battery as an example, which contains lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6), organic carbonate, copper, etc.The chemical substances are all in the national hazardous waste list. LiPF6 is strongly corrosive, and it can easily decompose in water to produce hydrofluoric acid (HF), which is highly toxic; organic solvents and their decomposition and hydrolysis products can cause significant pollution to the atmosphere, water, and soil, and persecute the ecosystem; heavy metals such as copper accumulate in the environment and persecute humans through the biological chain; once phosphorus enters water bodies such as lakes, it can easily cause eutrophication of water bodies.

It can be seen that if the abandoned low-temperature lithium iron phosphate batteries are not recycled, it will be a persecution to the environment and human health.
